Cash is a very sweet and lovable senior lab mix that I got to meet a while back. He was rescued three years ago by his owner and said that he wasn't very outgoing or friendly with both people and dogs. Since she's had him, she noticed he has become friendlier, and while he still isn't good with dogs, he is slowly opening up to people. When I met Cash I had no knowledge of this, so I approach this photoshoot like I usually do with all my other dog clients and happily greet the humans and their furry companions. Cash and I instantly bonded, and he was a great model for me. He didn't show any signs of fear or shyness, but yet just wanted me to rub him all over and give him more chicken! Cash also wasn't a fan of water, if his ball touches the water he won't play with it anymore, nor does he want to go anywhere near water. When I first started the photo shoot I thought that's okay if he doesn't like it that's fine I don't want to force him into it. However as the shoot went on something told me to try and get him in. With the persuasion of some cooked chicken breast and a little bit of sweet talk and time I was able to get Cash chest deep in the water! His owner just sat back in amazement and was shocked that he followed me in. The trick with dogs, especially shy ones is you have to let them think the idea was theirs to begin with. I never pulled him in, never laid a hand on him, but merely had chicken in my hand and talked in a high-pitched smooth voice and tried my best to coax him step-by-step into the water. The entire time I made sure to give him lots of praise and for every step he got a piece of chicken, and by the end of the shoot he followed me in without any treats! It was a great moment that I was able to share with him, and even though this was my first time meeting Cash it was nice to be able to have that good of a connection. Often times as a photographer you photograph so many people and dogs, or whatever the subject may be, and it can become a little routine and machine like. But every once in a while there will be that extra special person or dog that you bond a little bit more with. Now I'm not saying that I don't love every client that I photograph because I do, I mean come on who doesn't love dogs! But there are those dogs that just have a stronger connection with you then others and for me Cash was one of them. You'll be able to see Cash in my new upcoming calendar, so stay tuned!
