Monday I had the opportunity to photograph a training seminar on the incredible sport of Mondioring! It's a protection sport for dogs that challenges their obedience and agility. It is so cool to watch and I had a blast photographing the action and learning in the process! In this sport dogs must go through a series of exercises. Healing is one exercise where the dog must maintain a nice heal next to the handlers side at all times and maintain the pace of the handler. The dogs are also challenged in jumps. They have several jumps they must clear both vertically and horizontally. Retrieve is another exercise where the dog must bring back an item you want, sit, and hold it in their mouth until given the command to release it. The are also challenged in scent work. 3 wooden rods are placed among an array of items and the dogs have to find one of them that is marked with a specific scent and successfully bring it back to the handler. Food refusal is another exercise they go through where a piece of chicken or some other food is thrown at the dog during a down stay and they must ignore it and be focusing on their handler. Change of positions is another test they must complete. This is when dogs must sit, stand, and lay down on command within a specific space, usually a box. Long sit or down is an exercise in which the handler steps out of view of their dog while the dog is in a sit or down stay, all the while distractions are going on that might spook or provoke the dog to break their stay. If completed successfully the handler return to their dog that never moved. Protection is also add where a series of bite training scenarios are set up for the dogs.
